East Devon District Council said the Environment Agency – South and South West is advising against bathing at Budleigh Salterton following a pollution incident.
The incident began at 11.23pm on Wednesday, May 13, according to the Environment Agency.
The affected bathing water is Budleigh Salterton, where bathing is not advised due to pollution from sewage.
Budleigh Salterton is at the mouth of the River Otter on the south coast of Devon. It is a pebble beach resort, approximately one kilometre wide, backed by the promenade and cliffs.
Anyone contacting the Environment Agency about the incident has been asked to email enquiries@environment-agency.gov.uk and quote NIRS reference 0250642.
The incident comes days before a Paddle Out session across the region, including places such as Sidmouth, Branscombe and Exmouth.
A spokesperson for the event said: “On 16th May, the UK will take to the water, the shorelines and riverbanks in bigger numbers than ever before to demand an end to sewage pollution.
“Because up and down the UK sewage is STILL being dumped in our waterways, data is missing and we are paying the price.
“We are sick of it.
“Sick of the lies, sick of the greed and sick of a system that’s rigged against us.”
