Shane Lowry has opted to take some time away from golf following the PGA Championship and will sit out the next two weeks of action.

The Offaly man has made the same call as his close pal Rory McIlroy, with neither of them playing in this week’s CJ CUP Byron Nelson or the Charles Schwab Challenge at the end of the month. Both events take place in Texas.

Both Lowry and McIlroy will return to action at the $20million Memorial Tournament at Muirfield in Ohio, which begins on June 4. Scottie Scheffler is aiming to win the event for the third year in a row, as he once again aims to take home $4million for winning it once again.

The world number one is in action at TPC Craig Ranch for the CJ CUP Byron Nelson and tees off at 1.33pm Irish time on Thursday. Scheffler is 7/4 generally with the bookies to make it back-to-back wins at TPC Craig Ranch after triumphing by eight shots last year on a record-breaking 31-under-par total.

Having grown up nearby in Dallas, it is a tournament very close to Scheffler’s heart.

“I have a lot of strong feelings towards this tournament,” he said.

“This tournament means a lot to me. Mr. Nelson means a lot to a lot of us from the Dallas area, but especially myself. He’s a guy that I’ve looked up to, the way he approached the game for a long time, and he’s a family man.

“I think his legacy is something that’s important to me as well, and being able to play here and compete in this tournament is the tournament I grew up dreaming of having a chance to play in. So I have a lot of strong feelings for this tournament, and I hope nothing but the best for it.”
