AI is reimagining where value is concentrated in the workplace, forcing us to redesign jobs around the new rules of human value

“AI won’t take your job, but someone using AI will.”

It’s become one of the most recognized, memorable, and cliched lines of the AI era. At first glance, it sounds deceptively empowering. Anyone who can use an AI tool well or has AI skills will feel that their job and career is future-proofed.

But, when pulled apart, this sentence holds little weight, AI expert and business executive Sangeet Paul Choudary told me when I interviewed him yesterday.

Choudary, who authored Reshuffle: Who Wins when AI Restacks the Knowledge Economy, believes that instead, this phrase should move from focusing on merely using AI tools, to something even more profound:

“AI won’t take your job,” he said. “But it might help you reimagine it.”

According to Choudary, the professionals that will be best positioned to thrive in the AI era are not necessarily the ones who can use AI tools, Claude skills, or ChatGPT prompts to vibe code or reduce time spent on meaningless tasks at work.

After all, AI tools will automate coordination-heavy work, which means that even if you’re using AI tools, the coordination tasks in your role become obsolete and your job is left with a half-empty shell. This leaves you with a job identity crisis and you’re forced to rethink what your profession will look like if AI continues to excel at eating away the task-intensive parts of your role.

However, he argues, there is one non-negotiable trait that will render employees formidable in the AI revolution:

Entrepreneurialism.

But not in the way you think. He’s not referring to starting a side hustle, launching a start-up, or freelancing, although those are all excellent ideas.

What Choudary has in mind instead is a total redesign of work that forces today’s employees to choose between being a regular worker who quickly sinks into insignificance by automation, or functioning as an employee-preneur.

AI-Proof Your Career With This Critical Skill

I posed the question: “What’s the type of professional in 2026 and beyond that is about to become dangerously overvalued?”

His answer:

“The single most important trait is the ability to be entrepreneurial. That is, you don’t rely on a specific career path for your company. You don’t rely on your company to show you where you’re headed.

“When you’re entrepreneurial,” he explained, “you’re constantly solving problems. You’re using your, you know, your skills, your capabilities, but you’re also constantly looking at what’s possible with AI.”

He recommends you ask yourself questions like:

How can you use that (what’s possible with AI) to solve fundamentally new problems? How can you ensure that you’re constantly learning new capabilities to move further?

“You have to think about new ways of solving your customer’s problem,” Choudary continued. “You have to also think about what the landscape of the industry is going to look like a year from now, and place bets on what will be valued a year from now. And then start moving in that direction, but then be aware of the fact that that’s going to change every day. So keep your radar on, keep reviewing your map, and keep improving the map as you move forward.

Indeed, what Choudary suggested here is exactly what I’ve been seeing resonate across my conversations with hiring leaders and Fortune 500 execs, and in my research of the latest workplace trends and hiring reports.

Organizations are increasingly seeking to hire workers who can clearly demonstrate qualities like:

Self-awarenessAdaptability and resilienceReceptiveness to feedbackA growth mindset of perpetual learningSystems thinking and big-picture awarenessProactive problem-solving and innovative mindsetOpenness and curiosity, and a willingness to redesign and reimagine entire workflows and reconsider your job description before your employer does, determining where you can best provide value

These entrepreneurial qualities allow you to maximize and leverage AI capabilities, and they also provide greater value creation for organizations, which protects your career by providing you with high-value opportunities long-term.

Choudary also warned against the distraction of using AI the wrong way–merely to automate coordination without changing how we’re already accustomed to working.

“It’s very easy to get distracted by do work faster, cheaper and probably at, I would say better, but not in a fully the imagined way, right?”

He referred to an example of where he’d paid about $15,000 for a website design agency to develop the website for his first book, which took a process of several months and back-and-forth to complete. But with Reshuffle, he vibe-coded the entire interactive website in half a work day.

But, Choudary noted, the real value was not that AI made it faster and significantly cheaper. The bigger value long-term was being able to “build fundamentally new things that I would not have built in the past,” he says.

“I was able to build a live index of how different industries are getting reshuffled. I was able to build a live interactive map of the different topics in the book. And a lot of that is about reimagining what are new ways to solve your customer’s problem,” he shared.

“So just because you have the tools, don’t just go faster, better, cheaper,” Choudary advises. “Think about what’s the fundamentally new way to solve your customer’s problem.

“There is no fixed formula on even the companies who would like to measure things like tool adoption. There is no link between that and the right outcomes. So you have to be entrepreneurial and constantly keep improving your map.”

The old way of imagining one’s career and job future is over.

Stop waiting on your employer to keep you abreast of what’s going on in your industry. Stop deceiving yourself into the comfort that learning AI skills and tools alone will save you.

It no longer matters alone if you know how to use AI.

That ship has passed.

The only thing that will save you right now–whether you work a nine-to-five or lead your own business–is your mindset:

Are you thinking like an entrepreneur?

Are you remapping your own job and career value before someone else maps it for you?
