‘Exciting times ahead’ for village pub which closed its doors around a year ago

A “much-loved” community pub is set to reopen after a long-awaited makeover as plans have emerged.
The Bell in Smalley, near Heanor, closed around a year ago in May 2025, with the building put up for sale at a guide price of £600,000.
Its new owners are now planning an extensive refurbishment of the venue, both indoors and outdoors, including the introduction of a food kiosk.
According to a planning application, works will include the removal of “redundant” outbuildings in the garden area and the construction of a covered seating area to the rear of the pub “to enable users to enjoy the garden area year round with the potential to open this up in the summer months”.
As part of the extension, a food kiosk and toilet facility have been proposed so food can be prepared and served outside.
The concrete stairs on the side of the pub would also be replaced with a “more aesthetically pleasing” metal staircase.
Once the pub reopens, it is set to create 24 new jobs – eight full-time roles, 12 part-time positions and four flexible roles for peak periods and events.
Developers believe the renovation of the pub would “rejuvenate” the village, and, according to Smalley Community Group, renovation works to the Bell Inn are due to begin this June.
