People who saw the dozens of dead marine animals on a beach in Carmarthenshire said it was ‘sad and shocking’

Horrified beachgoers were shocked to see a mountain of trapped sharks and fish wash up on a Welsh beach over the bank holiday weekend. The dozens of fish, which were trapped in a net, washed up Pembrey Beach in Carmarthenshire on Sunday, May 24.
People described the sight on the beach, which is also known as Cefn Sands, as “sad and shocking”. A number of the fish caught in the net appeared to be sharks, including dogfish.

Some suggested that a net on a trawling boat might have broke and been lost at sea, while others thought it might be an abandoned catch that was washed up.

According to the WWF (World Wildlife Foundation), ghosts nets are fishing nets that have been abandoned, lost or discarded at sea, on beaches or in harbours. The organisation says that every year, ghost nets are responsible for trapping and killing thousands of marine animals.
The nets continue to catch marine life in the sea, trapping and killing marine animals from fish, to sharks, dolphins, whales and sea turtles.
The photos of the trapped fish and sharks generated hundreds of comments, with people expressing their dismay at what was found.
One person wrote: “Wow, how devastating,” while another said: “Sad and shocking isn’t it… Happens every day out of sight too.”
