The hot weather is already impacting this week’s recycling collections across Bristol, with Bristol Waste bosses warning that crews may not be able to get around to collect everyone’s cardboard and recycling this week.
The council-owned firm said that the ‘extreme heat’ was impacting the mechanism in the recycling vehicles that process plastic and cardboard.
Crews are starting earlier – at 5am instead of 6am – to get ahead of the rapidly rising temperatures in the mornings, but collections on Bank Holiday Monday were affected by the heat, and more are expected to be missed as the week continues.
In a statement last night, Monday, May 25, Bristol Waste said: “The extreme heat has affected some of our recycling collections, and unfortunately we’ve been unable to collect all plastic and cardboard.
“This is because high temperatures can impact the mechanism in our vehicles that processes these materials. We’re working to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
“If your plastic and cardboard haven’t been collected by 6pm today, please bring them back in and put them out again on your next scheduled collection day.
“To help keep everyone safe in the heat, our crews will be starting earlier tomorrow, from 5am. Due to the forecast heat, this approach will remain in place for the rest of the week, and some disruption to collections may continue,” they added.
