Traffic on the M1 near junction 24
A stretch of the M1 was closed in both directions after a reported “serious multi-vehicle collision” which also caused a fire.
National Highways said both the northbound and southbound carriageways had been closed between junctions 23 and 23a in Leicestershire following the crash on Tuesday (May 26) evening.
The agency said emergency services were on the way to the scene and reported two miles of congestion, which was leading to 20-mite delays.
“The M1 in Leicestershire between J23 and J23A is now closed in both directions, due to a serious multiple vehicle collision which has resulted in a vehicle fire,” the agency wrote on X at 7.34pm.
“All emergency services are enroute Current delays of 20mins and 2 miles of congestion.”
In an update just before 9.30pm, National Highways said the northbound remained closed, while one lane of the southbound was also shut.
