The male swan, known locally as Samson, was found with a hook stuck in his leg and was visibly distressed.

His injury was spotted by a member of the public, who alerted the park ranger on Monday, May 25.

The ranger contacted the RSPCA and Rachel Wilson from Rachel’s Wildlife Rescue.

The first rescue attempt was unsuccessful as Samson was too distressed to leave the water.

He was monitored overnight and given fortified feed, and after several rescue attempts, he was finally caught on the fourth try.

He was then taken to Wild Side Vets in Barrow where the hook was removed.

Samson has now been returned to the lake and will continue to receive health checks on site.

The council has said the incident highlights the reasons behind the fishing ban at the boating lake, which is home to a nesting pair of swans and their two cygnets.

The ban is in place to protect the park’s wildlife.

The council said: “This incident highlights why fishing is prohibited at Barrow Park.

“Our park rangers also continue to face hostility while carrying out their duties and reminding individuals of the laws in place here.

“Our teams are simply doing their job to protect wildlife, maintain public spaces, and ensure the park remains safe and enjoyable for everyone.”

However, the council said that signs warning people not to fish are often removed or thrown into the lake, causing unnecessary costs for taxpayers who have to pay for replacements.

Visitors are being asked to respect the byelaws and the environment including the welfare of the park’s wildlife.

Anyone caught fishing illegally at the site will receive a £100 fixed penalty notice.

People are urged to report illegal fishing or vandalism by calling 0300 373 3300.
