The 26-year-old spent his entire career outside of Europe prior to his move to the Stadio Benito Villamarin, starting at boyhood club Atletico Huila in Colombia.
A permanent switch to Mexican side Pachuca came after a series of loan spells, and Deossa subsequently found himself at Monterrey in 2025, which preceded his €11.5m (just under £10m) switch to southern Spain. Betis are said to have beaten West Ham to signing him after an impressive Club World Cup campaign last year.
Deossa has had limited opportunities in La Liga, making just eight starts and 12 cameo appearances without scoring. As a result, he could leave Betis this summer, with Seville-based news outlet ABC Sevilla claiming that Ipswich are the latest club to enquire about him.
The report adds that Argentina giants River Plate are also looking to swoop, while Brazilian sides Flamengo and Vasco da Gama are also keen.
Betis would be open to a deal that sees them turn a profit on Deossa, with Monterrey due 15% of any money made. Manuel Pellegrini’s side are hopeful that interest could start a bidding war.
Alex’s verdict
It’s hard to know how much or little to trust local news outlets abroad when it comes to transfer news, but there’s no reasons to doubt that Deossa could be someone on a list of midfield candidates for Ipswich and that contact has ben made.
At the same time, Betis clearly want to move him on to bring in new signings following Champions League qualification, so it’s in their best interests to drum up potential interest in the Colombian.
It’s an eye-catching rumour. Deossa was largely unknown until he moved to Betis, and with limited minutes (just over 700 in La Liga), it’s hard to gauge just how good he is.
He’s clearly a capable box-to-box midfielder, although he failed to hit the target with any of his 18 shots in the league in 2025/26 (16 of which were outside the box). A natural left-footer who’s smooth on the ball while standing at 6’1, he’d suit the role next to Azor Matusiwa.
But if I’m honest, I don’t know if he’s at the level that Ipswich need in the Premier League. Team-mate Sergi Altimira would be a better fit in my eyes. Could Deossa make could cover? Sure, but it would have to be at the right price.
Let’s see if any more comes of it.
