Taylor Fritz continued to bounce back from his Toronto semi-final defeat on Monday at the Cincinnati Open, where he overcame Lorenzo Sonego and handled a mid-match power outage to reach the fourth round in Ohio for the third time.
The 27-year-old, who lost to Ben Shelton in straight sets in Canada last week, moved past the Italian 7-6(4), 7-5 in two hours and eight minutes, without facing a break point, to improve to 6-2 in the pair’s Lexus ATP Head2Head series.
After winning a 67-minute opening set, play was suspended for about 75 minutes. Upon resumption, the second set went on serve until 5-all when Sonego missed five first serves to give Fritz the break point he needed. The American then held to love to close out his 38th tour-level victory of the season, according to Infosys ATP Win/Loss Index.
”I was looking for that break the entire match today,” Fritz said. “I wish I could have gotten it done in the first, when I had a couple of chances. But there’s a lot of scoreboard pressure at the end of the sets, and that’s where a lot of times I am finding that break.”
Fritz was down 0/30 serving at 4-5 to stay in the second set, but dug himself out of danger without facing a break point in the game, or the match. Last year’s US Open finalist has not been broken in two matches this tournament and has not faced a break point since his second service game in his opening victory over American qualifier Emilio Nava.
By advancing to the fourth round, the American has become the only player to reach at least the last 16 at all four hard-court ATP Masters 1000 events in 2025. The 27-year-old advanced to the fourth round in Indian Wells and the semi-finals in Miami and then Toronto last week.
Chasing his first Masters 1000 crown of the season and second overall, the former Indian Wells champ will meet #NextGenATP Brazilian Joao Fonseca or Frenchman Terence Atmane in the fourth round. Fritz is the first American to be among the top four seeds in Cincinnati since Andy Roddick in 2007
Now 21-4 since the start of June — a run that includes grass-court titles in Stuttgart and Eastbourne and a Wimbledon semi-final showing — Fritz is well positioned in sixth in the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin. The American is aiming to make his second consecutive appearance at the Nitto ATP Finals, having advanced to the title match in 2024.
Fritz next plays the winner of 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals champion Joao Fonseca and French qualifier Terence Atmane.
Former World No. 3 Stefanos Tsitsipas’s disappointing run at the four North American hard court Masters 1000s this year continued when, despite serving 14 aces, he fell to Frenchman Benjamin Bonzi 6-7(4), 6-3, 6-4.
The Greek finishes the series with just four wins across Indian Wells, Miami, Toronto and Cincinnati, where he reached three consecutive semi-finals from 2020-2022, including a run to the final three years ago.
Bonzi next meets Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.
