Every orphaned fawn rescue is a heartwarming story worth telling, even for the pros at Magnolia Fawn Rescue, who meet dozens of deer every year. On May 21, however, they met an extra special baby who’d been abandoned by his mother and left to fend for himself for too long. Fortunately, a family found him just in time and whisked him away to the baby deer rescue.
The rescued fawn had been abandoned because his overbite left him unable to nurse from his mother, but everything changed when he arrived at Magnolia Fawn Rescue. At just 2.8 pounds, he can’t be much smaller, but he’s also incredibly strong!
What a cute little fawn! I was instantly jealous of the woman holding him like a baby, but she wasn’t cuddling him for fun. He would’ve been in serious trouble if he’d gone much longer without milk.
“His ears are all curled, he’s so dehydrated!” commenter @dominoeffect1203 noticed. “3 days is too long to wait, but hopefully he can recover.”

This orphaned fawn’s rescue was definitely a close call, but he appeared strong and alert throughout his treatment. Even though he’s still relaxing in the incubator for now, everything is looking bright for his recovery. And it’s all thanks to the South Carolina baby deer rescue and the family who found him.
Viewer @scen3qu33n said what everyone was thinking when she wrote, “his little overbite is so cute.” It’s heartbreaking that it prevented him from nursing on his mama, but it’s an incredible relief to know there are people out there to help fawns exactly like him.
What to Do if You Find a Fawn Alone in the Wild
Unless you’re a professional animal rescuer like the woman who runs Magnolia Fawn Rescue, please do not attempt to save or rehabilitate a fawn who was left alone. Mama deer often leave their babies alone to go in search of food, so it’s often a matter of time before she returns.

As one commenter pointed out, though, signs such as curled ears can indicate dehydration or illness. If you find a fawn with curled ears, or one who has been crying all day long, please contact a local wildlife rehabilitator instead of offering anything to eat or drink. Small interactions when necessary can be life-saving, like guiding baby deer out of the middle of the road, but please don’t touch or feed them.
With the right kind of care and a little bit of time, baby animals like this resilient fawn can stand a chance.
