The United Kingdom plans to introduce a new tourist tax covering, among other things, hotels, bed-and-breakfasts, and short-term rentals.
The new tax may only be implemented in areas administered by 13 strategic metropolitan authorities in England, including London. Each mayor will decide independently whether to introduce the fee and set its amount.
The surcharge is expected to range from £3 to as much as £11.50 per night. The funds raised from the tax are to be allocated to local investments and infrastructure development. The introduction of the tourist tax is part of a European trend toward seeking additional sources of funding for destinations popular with tourists.
