Adidas will release a commemorative Manchester United fourth kit, according to reports. In 2027, United will celebrate the 125th anniversary of the club adopting the red, white and black colours they are synonymous with now.

The Reds strictly only use three kits in a season, which are made up of a typical red home kit, an away kit and a third outfit which is a different colour. However, this year, Adidas are reportedly plotting a special fourth kit to celebrate United’s heritage.

It will pay homage to the club’s transition from Newton Heath to Manchester United in 1902, which saw the team move from a green and gold jersey to the current colour scheme supporters and rival clubs know to this day.

This news has been reported by Footy Headlines, who claim there will be two versions of the commemorative fourth kit.

The first one is understood to be made up of a ‘Man Utd Red’ base which is expected to be completed with white shorts and black socks. In addition, a second version is believed to be ‘Court Green’ to nod to the club’s original identity.

It’s currently unclear if the Newton Heath inspired jersey will be one for the outfield players or as a goalkeeping jersey. The commemorative kits are not expected to be available until 2027, the 125th anniversary year.

It’s also understood to likely feature in potential Champions League fixtures or domestic cup competitions like the FA Cup or the League Cup, assuming United have not been knocked out of those by the time 2027 comes round.

Adidas have created several one-off United kits and alternative jerseys, but none have been used in match-play. The brand has put together Chinese New Year jerseys and digital EA kits, but a fourth kit worn by the players has not been done before since their relationship began in 2015.

One of the closest the club has come to this was back in 2008, when United and Manchester City both wore retro inspired kits in the Manchester Derby to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Munich Air Disaster.

The 125th anniversary of the red, white and black adoption will surely intrigue fans who pay money every year for the latest United kits. Considering the significance of the year, it’s perhaps fitting Michael Carrick, an ex-United star, will be the one in charge.

The former midfielder was given a two-year contract at the end of the Premier League campaign, after he guided the club to a convincing third placed finish. Next season, the focus will turn to how Carrick can cope with the Reds competing in four competitions, as well as his decisions in his first transfer window as United manager.
