Morrisons has revealed the locations of seven stores earmarked for closure, and four of them are in our region. It comes following the chain’s announcement that it intends to shut 100 shops this year.
Last month, the supermarket giant confirmed it would close 100 of its Morrisons Daily high street stores as part of its latest restructuring programme. Seven of the affected stores are located across Teesside and Yorkshire.
It is believed that the stores considered most at risk are those that were absorbed into the business following Morrisons’ acquisition of numerous McColl’s sites in 2022. In 2024, approximately 132 corner shops were converted into Morrisons Daily stores in an effort to save those outlets from shutting down.
Following this development, the locations of seven Morrisons Daily stores facing closure have now been made public, reports Hull Live. While not all affected branches have been officially confirmed, those identified so far appear to be concentrated in Teesside and Yorkshire, with stores in Redcar, Loftus, Guisborough and Stokesley to close.
In an email to councillors regarding the York closure, a Morrisons spokesperson said: “Following a detailed review, the store is being proposed for closure.” The store in question was acquired as part of Morrisons’ takeover of McColl’s in 2022, and has been operating at a loss for a prolonged period despite considerable efforts and investment to turn around its performance.
“Rising operating costs in recent years have made it even more difficult to return the store to profitability and we see no viable pathway to achieve this.” Here is a full list of the Morrisons Daily stores set to close in 2026:

“Closure would happen no earlier than Friday, July 17. ” In response to concerns over job losses, the supermarket chain said it was in consultation with affected staff and would endeavour to redeploy as many employees as possible within the company. A spokesperson said: “We will work hard to mitigate the impact on customers, continuing to serve them through other nearby stores and online.
“The performance of all company-owned stores across our Convenience business is subject to continuous review, This process has identified several stores, which were part of the McColl’s acquisition, whose performance has been challenged for a number of years and which are loss-making, despite remedial action. “
Molly Monks F.I.P.A., insolvency specialist at Parker Walsh, said: “The transformation of retail was already underway but the cost of living crisis has dramatically accelerated the closure of stores that might otherwise have survived another few years.
“Discretionary spending has collapsed in many categories and footfall on high streets outside major city centres remains stubbornly below pre-pandemic levels.”
