Sir Ringo Starr has thrilled fans as he shared his secret to staying young. The legendary Beatle made the comments in an interview with Quotable, which has gone viral again after being reposted this week. At 85, the drummer is still going strong as he recently released a new album, Long Long Road, and duetted on Sir Paul McCartney’s latest album, The Boys Of Dungeon Lane.
Sir Ringo has lifted the lid on his surprise secret as he revealed he has broccoli with every meal. On the secret to his longevity, he said: “I always answer broccoli. I have broccoli with nearly every meal. And of course I work out and I train. I try to keep moving. And this is what I came with.” He joked: “It’s great that my hair stayed coloured.”
It’s not the only time Sir Ringo has praised broccoli as he told Rolling Stone: “Well, you’ve got to eat more broccoli. All the good things about me, I blame broccoli for.”
Adapting his trademark catchphrase, he said: “So now I say, peace and love and broccoli.” In the comments of the Quotable Instagram post, fans praised Sir Ringo, whose real name is Richard Starkey.

On Sir Paul’s latest album, him and Sir Ringo paid tribute to their upbringing in Liverpool with new song, Home To Us. The message of the track was key to getting Ringo involved as Sir Paul said in quotes shared with the ECHO last week: “I knew he would identify with the lyrics cause you know the idea of where we grew up was rough – but it was home to us.
“He knew I felt like that, I knew he felt like that. So I thought we could come together on that idea. And we did.” Sir Ringo’s new album Long Long Road was released in April.
In celebration of the release, a listening party of the new album was held at The Jacaranda on April 21. Sir Ringo’s face was back in the club for the party as a satellite message was beamed in for fans who had attended.
The ECHO was in attendance at the event as the 85-year-old was “amazed” The Jacaranda is “still there and happening”. The venue has been firmly cemented in Liverpool’s music history since it opened in 1958.
Speaking to the crowd via a video message, Sir Ringo said: “Hi there everybody, Ringo here. I believe you are there for a listening party, I hope you enjoy it.
“But I am still amazed that The Jacaranda club is still there and happening. How great! It was such a thing when I was a lad, it was a step up and it’s great that you’re still doing it and you’re letting the new bands in. Peace and love to all of you, have a great night.”
Long Long Road is the second album with Sir Ringo’s collaboration with T Bone Burnett after last year’s Look Up. Speaking ahead of the album, the iconic musician said how proud he was to reprise the partnership with the American producer.
He said: “I’m blessed to have T Bone in my life right now and working with me on these records. After we did the last record, which I love listening to, this one just sort of happened.
“I like to say sometimes I make the right moves, like you can go left or right at any point, and one of the right moves was hooking up with T Bone for Look Up, and now for this one, which I’m calling Long Long Road, because I’ve been on a long long road.”
