We’re putting together a feature on road.cc about cycle commuting, and we’d really like your help.

We have road.cc Commuting Week 2025 coming up, and one area we’re looking at is this:

Cycle commuting myths debunked: how to convince your cyclephobic friend to make the switch.

We had a lot of valuable responses earlier in the year when we asked for your help on what to do if your bike is stolen and how to store your bike indoors (thank you so much), so we’re doing the same again here. After all, you can’t beat personal experience. As you can imagine, there are a lot of experienced cycle commuters here at road.cc HQ, but we’re interested in what you do, with the aim of passing on useful info to others.

Okay, so what are we asking this time?

A common scenario is that you’ll hear people say, “I’d like to cycle to work every day but…” And then they’ll tell you why they don’t think it’s a good idea.

Those reasons might be, for example:

I’ll get rained on all the time.
I’ll be sweaty all day.
Urban traffic is too dangerous.
There’s nowhere to store my bike safely.
I’m not fit enough.
It’s too difficult to carry the stuff I need for work.
A bike will be expensive.
I don’t have the time.

You know the sort of thing. People have these ideas in their heads, so they never try cycle commuting even when, in fact, it would be the most suitable option with many benefits.

For example, if you ride a bike to work, do you get rained on all the time? Do you spend your life in a semi-aquatic state? Or do you, in fact, check the weather forecast, buy a decent waterproof, and cope absolutely fine?

In short, we’re interested in your tips for making cycle commuting a pleasant experience. What has worked? What hasn’t? We’re talking about cycle commutes of all types and distances, by the way.
