Update #2 [Sun 7th Jun 2026, 3pm]:

It looks like European ratings board PEGI expects (or expected?) Gears of War: E-Day to release on the PS5, as the game was rated for Sony’s console, as seen below:

At this point, either Jeff Grubb has made a mistake, or this decision was literally made within the last few weeks – potentially even days.

Update #1 [Sun 7th Jun 2026, 1:15pm]: While speculation runs rampant about whether Gears of War: E-Day will come to the PS5 or not, reliable snoop billbil-kun has chimed in on the story.

He’s unable to confirm either way, but he says a SKU for a physical PS5 version of the third-person shooter does exist. This would certainly corroborate Jeff Grubb’s rumour, that the game was planned for Sony’s platform and that changed recently.

Billbil-kun says pre-orders for the game will open on Xbox and PC immediately after the Xbox Showcase today.

Original Story: Gears of War: E-Day was in development for the PS5 up until very recently, but Xbox has allegedly made the decision to cancel the port.

Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb revealed the tidbit on a livestream overnight, ahead of today’s Xbox Showcase, where the third-person shooter is expected to close out the show.

This latest effort from The Coalition is important because it’s one of the few upcoming first-party games from Microsoft not confirmed for PS5; the Redmond firm has already committed Halo: Campaign Evolved and Fable to Sony’s format.

Here’s what Grubb said:

“Gears of War: E-Day was gonna be on PS5, but it’s not anymore. That just happened, that’s a decision that just got made. They’re going backwards on this stuff, where it’s like, ‘this battle doesn’t make any sense,’ and now they’re like ‘exclusives, to what, sell another 20 million Xboxes?’”

Obviously, this is still a rumour and could turn out to be inaccurate, but Grubb is generally a strong source and there’s no reason to disbelieve what he’s saying here.

Gears of War obviously made its PS5 debut last year with Reloaded, a port which seemed designed to acclimatise PS5 players to the property.

But if true, this would align with comments coming out of Xbox since new executive Asha Sharma took over, where she’s hinted at bringing back some form of exclusivity.

According to Jeff Grubb, Gears of War: E-Day will not release on PS5.

Of course, it all runs in contrast with the kind of statements Microsoft has been making for years, when even CEO Satya Nadella has praised the division’s work on PS5.

We should learn more about Xbox’s direction later today, but as I’ve written before, this constant flip-flopping is getting real tiresome now.

If it’s exclusive, will you buy an Xbox to play Gears of War: E-Day? (690 votes)
