Lindy Jones, 65, brought the curtain down on 48 years as a district nurse in Llanidloes at the end of May, bringing to a close an extraordinary career spent caring for others.

Since beginning her nursing career in the late 1970s, Lindy has become a familiar and trusted face to generations of local families, supporting patients through illness, recovery and some of life’s most difficult moments.

Her commitment, compassion and calm professionalism have solidified her as an invaluable part of the community.

Lindy was celebrated on Thursday, May 28, with colleague Margot Jones saying: “There can be no families in Llanidloes and district whose lives you have not touched with your loving kindness and nursing skills.”

The Llanidloes Leg Club – known as Only Legs Aloud – also heaped praise on Lindy, who established the club 16 years ago.

“Lindy, along with a small team of volunteers, set up Only Legs Aloud over 16 years ago, and her enthusiasm and passion has been instrumental in its success,” it said in a post on Facebook.

Working as a district nurse means travelling in all weather conditions, visiting patients in their homes, offering medical care, reassurance and dignity to those who need it most.

Over almost five decades, Lindy has cared for countless residents across Llanidloes, often going above and beyond for her patients and their families.

Alongside her nursing career, Lindy has also been widely recognised for her incredible fundraising efforts over the years.

Whether organising local events, supporting charities or helping raise money for healthcare services and community causes, she has always worked tirelessly to give something back.

Her enthusiasm and generosity have helped benefit countless people across the area, earning her admiration both inside and outside of the NHS.

Lindy’s children, son Ben and daughter Amy Bucknall, described their mum as someone whose near half century of service to the local community has “changed lives”.

“We just want to take a moment to say how incredibly proud we are of our mum,” they said.

“For nearly 48 years, she has dedicated her life to caring for others as a district nurse in Llanidloes.

“That kind of commitment is rare, and the impact she’s had is impossible to fully measure.

“Day after day, year after year, she has shown compassion, strength and kindness to so many people when they needed it most.

“She hasn’t just done a job – she’s changed lives. She’s been there in people’s hardest moments, offering comfort, dignity and genuine care.

“The difference she has made in her community will carry on long after her retirement.

“As she reaches the end of this chapter, we couldn’t be prouder of everything she’s achieved. She’s an inspiration, not just to us, but to everyone who has had the privilege of knowing her.

“Thank you for everything you’ve given. You truly deserve this next chapter.”

Family, friends, colleagues and residents describe her as kind, dependable and deeply respected throughout the area.

Many local people will remember her not only for her nursing skills, but also for her warmth and ability to comfort people during challenging times.

Throughout enormous changes within the NHS and healthcare services over the years, Lindy has remained committed to serving her community with dedication and professionalism.
