A BID to use Tweed Green as part of a section of a popular cycling race in Peebles has proven successful.
An application from Hillside Outside, the organisers of Tour O The Borders, was put before members of the Peebles Common Good Fund sub-committee on Wednesday (June 10). The request won the unanimous support of councillors, barring two who stepped aside due to their upcoming participation in the event.
Tweeddale West councillor and committee chair Viv Thomson said: “I am happy for the event in the Green to be used. It brings a lot of people to the town. I am in total support.” Her stance was backed by fellow ward member Eric Small.
Tweeddale East councillor Marshall Douglas praised the organisers for bringing such a “valuable event” to the town. Fellow ward member Julie Pirone also pledged her support for the event, but called for a plan to be put forward for co-ordinating pedestrians during the event.
The success of the bid is subject to the appropriate fees being paid, with members giving their support to Hillside Outside in keeping track of how much they need to pay.
Tour O The Borders is a closed-road cycling event through the south of Scotland. It starts and finishes in Peebles and is set to go ahead on Sunday, September 6, this year.
