Spurs received about £10m from Amazon to film their 2019-20 season and the United deal is understood to be a record access fee for a sport documentary. Other platforms also pitched to United and held discussions before a decision was made on Amazon.
Toby Craig, United chief communications officer, says it is “the right time to open our doors” for supporters to see behind the scenes. It will cover United’s return to the Champions League after a two-year absence.
Filming will start this summer in pre-season which will include footage of their new signings, as Carrick rebuilds his midfield in particular. United and other Premier League teams are expected to start preparations for the campaign next month and Carrick’s team will have friendlies in Ireland, Finland and Sweden before the season starts.
United did not sign off on a deal with documentary-makers last season during a campaign in which Amorim was dismissed in January after 14 months in charge. The club will be spared millions in compensation payments should the Portuguese coach take charge at AC Milan. United have a friendly booked in with Amorim’s prospective new club this summer.
It was revealed in an accounting report in February that they faced a compensation bill of up to £15.9m to cover Amorim’s exit and that of his staff, including coaches Carlos Fernandes, Adelio Candido, Emanuel Ferro and Jorge Vital. But that figure will be reduced in the event of them landing new jobs.
This documentary would have been comedy gold under past United managers
