Latest Aston Villa transfer news as academy graduate reported to be close to making £40m move to Newcastle UnitedJacob Ramsey of Aston VillaOn the move? Villa academy graduate Jacob Ramsey(Image: PA)

With academy graduate Jacob Ramsey looking increasingly likely to leave Aston Villa for Newcastle United this week, the reaction amid the claret and blue faithful has been surprising.

Yes, they are upset to see “one of their own” depart; yes, they acknowledge he is a good player; but they are generally united in the belief it is good business for Unai Emery as he bids to bring in his own recruits as the summer transfer window enters its final couple of weeks.

The 24-year-old, according to reports, is edging closer to swapping Villa Park for St James’ in a total package believed to be worth £40 million.

It will be a huge financial boost for the Villans with Ramsey, having come through the youth ranks, representing 100% profit as the club strives to meet the Premier League’s Profit and Sustainability rules.

Indeed, the fee could help open a lot of doors for Monchi and Co, with Villa generating well over £200 million from player sales alone since January 2024.

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.

Sky will show at least 215 live Premier League games next season, an increase of up to 100 more.

Fans agree and think the money is too good to turn down, with one posting on X: “I love Jacob Ramsey, but £40 million? You can’t say no to that.

“He’s injury prone, not a regular source of goals or assists when he’s fit, and has rejected contract offers. The club can’t say no to that deal.”

Another agreed, and believed the £40 million fee would give Villa more than enough financial wiggle room to sign a replacement, posting: “[£40m] is a lot for a replacement. I wonder if it will be used to bring Asensio back or whether it will be used elsewhere on another position.”

“£40 million is a very good price”, added a fellow supporter. “It is going to hurt seeing him in another team’s colours.”

A another added: “It’s pure profit. That’ll do wonders for our Financial Fair Play over the next three seasons.”

Emery has had to endure a relatively quiet summer of spending so far, only welcoming two first-team additions in goalkeeper Marco Bizot – brought in as an understudy for Emi Martinez – and the £30 million deal to bring in forward Evann Guessand.

The deal for Ramsey is believed to be so far along the line that the Guardian are suggesting he could face Villa in Saturday’s season-opener between the two teams at Villa Park (12.30pm).
