Leslie Irwin, 64, whose patients are being recalled by Spire Hospital in Washington, has opted to dissolve his firm, Irwin Medical Consultancy Services Limited.

On Companies House, it shows that Mr Irwin appointed a voluntary liquidation, via Leonard Curtis, in April last year, but the company wasn’t dissolved until last month.

Documents on Companies House show that the company was dissolved with just over £215,000 in positive credit.

Mr Irwin worked at Spire Washington Hospital and for South Tyneside and Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust between 2001 and 2023. He retired from the NHS Trust in 2022.

Spire Healthcare suspended Mr Irwin in August 2023 and withdrew his practising privileges in September 2024. The private hospital began recalling patients who underwent surgery with him during the summer of 2025.

Mr Irwin relinquished his registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) in May 2025, meaning no GMC investigation into his work is now possible.

Spire Washington Hospital has confirmed it is contacting a cohort of former patients and reviewing specific operations performed by Mr Irwin, following concerns raised with healthcare watchdogs.

Earlier this year, the private hospital issued a fresh apology to patients who did not receive “an appropriate standard of care” from the surgeon.

A Spire Healthcare spokesperson said: “We sincerely apologise to those patients who did not receive an appropriate standard of care from Mr Leslie Irwin, a consultant orthopaedic surgeon who has not practised at Spire Washington Hospital since 2023.

“We are currently reviewing specific procedures that were provided to a select cohort of patients of Mr Irwin and are in direct contact with these patients to offer support at what we recognise is a concerning time.

“The review is being run in accordance with NHS England’s National Quality Board: Recall Framework, which Spire Healthcare helped to develop.

“If any Spire Washington patients have questions about the care provided by Mr Irwin, they can call 0191 720 3031 or email spirepne@spirehealthcare.com, and a member of the dedicated review team will call them back.”

The Northern Echo has approached Mr Irwin for comment but has not received a response.
