BBC staffers are urging bosses to axe daytime TV and close channels to save radio and news services, as the broadcaster prepares to announce brutal cuts.
The broadcaster is set to axe hundreds of jobs across its core news team as part of a radical downsizing ahead of talks over the future of the licence fee.
Insiders warned that flagship news radio shows would be hit, with the cuts noticeable to listeners.

Jeremy Clarkson has revealed he has been diagnosed with an “aggressive” form of cancer.
Clarkson, 66, announced the news in an episode of his show Clarkson’s Farm, which streams on Amazon Prime Video.

In the series, which is understood to have been filmed in 2024 and 2025, Clarkson is shown sharing his diagnosis with co-stars Charlie Ireland and Kaleb Cooper. “I disappeared off the other week and I had a biopsy, and it is cancer, and it’s aggressive, but it’s really early,” he said.

Football fans should not put off getting help for health problems, experts have said, after data revealed a drop in A&E attendances when England are playing.
NHS England said people should come forward for care in their usual way and not wait until after a match. Fans have also been warned to avoid situations that could end with a trip to A&E.

Analysis of A&E attendance data during Euro 2024 found there were just under 17,000 fewer attendances than expected during England matches.
The biggest drop in attendances was in the hour before the start of the game, when services experienced an 11 per cent dip.
Attendances fell more sharply when England played at weekends compared with midweek games.
Once matches finished, A&E departments experienced a spike in demand, with hundreds more patients needing care in the following eight-hour period.

NHS England said the spike in A&E demand after matches finished was driven in part by around a 10 per cent increase in trauma and musculoskeletal attendances, consistent with falls, assaults and other injuries.

Welsh singer Bonnie Tyler is “no longer in a coma” but remains “very unwell” in intensive care, according to a post on her official website.
The 75-year-old was taken to a hospital near to her home in Faro, Portugal for emergency intestinal surgery earlier this month, and had been placed in an induced coma to aid her recovery.

Giant of 1980s pop/rock
Tyler – real name Gaynor Hopkins – from Neath in South Wales, is recognisable for her husky voice and operatic soft-rock sound.
She achieved international fame in the 1980s, with the release of her hit single Total Eclipse Of The Heart, which shot to the top of the charts in the UK and US.

The corporation’s departments have been ordered to cut a tenth of their costs in order to make savings of hundreds of millions of pounds.
BBC News, which employs about a quarter of the BBC’s more than 20,000 staff, is expected to shed hundreds of jobs, with an announcement due within days.
News staffers pleaded with bosses to look elsewhere for cuts. One told The i Paper: “We’ve already been cut to the bone, how are they going to find 450 jobs to cut without viewers and listeners noticing the gaps?
“We hoped the new director general [Matt Brittin] would recognise news is essential to the BBC’s reputation and future. Why not axe daytime filler programmes or close BBC Three or Four before making more cuts to news?”
Savings noticeable to listeners could include replacing Amol Rajan, who is due to leave the Today programme in September, with “cheaper stand-ins” instead of appointing a new permanent presenter, one insider suggested.

BBC looking to YouTube and TikTok
The BBC is expected to announce that resources will be redirected from news bulletins and rolling news, where audiences are declining, to producing bespoke content for the BBC app, YouTube and TikTok.
The World Service and BBC local radio could also be in the firing line. Former Google president Brittin said the BBC must “go where the audiences are”.
However, a senior BBC on-air figure said: “They’d be foolish to cut radio. It’s the most cost-efficient medium on the BBC and its listeners are loyal. The future might be news via apps and social media but we’re not there yet.”
Latest figures show the Today programme audience increased by 4 per cent to 5.79 million over the last quarter during a busy period for news.
Emily Maitlis, who quit the BBC to launch her own podcast, The News Agents, warned that cutting news jobs could lead to more serious errors, such as the misleading editing of a Trump speech which led to the resignation of News CEO Deborah Turness and director general Tim Davie.
“You have to make choices and things start going wrong. Salami-slicing away at budgets but pretending nothing’s changing is a recipe for disaster,” Maitlis told Radio Times. “You end up with an entirely weakened system, as opposed to an organisation that’s making decisive choices.”
‘Merge BBC Four and BBC Two’
Roger Mosey, the former director of BBC TV News, backed calls for the BBC to cut channels and daytime shows to preserve its news budget.
“The BBC should concentrate on what’s excellent and will be much viewed on iPlayer. BBC Three’s days are over; BBC Four should be merged with BBC Two,” he said. “If we are in a crisis of news, we should look to the BBC to prioritise that fight – not make it worse.”
The BBC declined to comment on the imminent announcement.
However, sources indicated that all departments would share the pain, with the corporation needing to close up to 2,000 roles.
The BBC has not denied that cutting daytime and closing channels could be required to meet its cost-saving target of £500m over two years.
Some within the BBC believe the cuts are designed to show ministers that the BBC is serious about cutting its cloth as negotiations begin over a reformed funding mechanism.
The BBC wants the Government to consider extending the licence fee to cover anyone watching subscription services such as Netflix and Disney.
