2. Joe Marler
Joe Marler became one of England’s most popular players thanks to his honesty, humour and larger-than-life personality.
A three-time Lions tourist and more than 90-cap England international, Marler was undoubtedly a top-class prop.
Yet his reputation among supporters sometimes places him in the conversation with England’s greatest-ever front-row forwards. While an excellent scrummager and competitor, others would argue players such as Jason Leonard, Graham Rowntree, Andrew Sheridan and Mako Vunipola reached higher levels at their peak.
1. Danny Cipriani
This was always going to be controversial.
Danny Cipriani possessed extraordinary talent and remains one of the most naturally gifted players England has ever produced.
Yet much of his reputation is based on what he might have achieved rather than what he actually achieved. Despite years of debate about his treatment by England selectors, Cipriani finished his international career with just 16 starts and never cemented himself as England’s long-term fly-half.
Compared to England greats such as Jonny Wilkinson, Owen Farrell and George Ford, his résumé simply doesn’t compare.
That’s what makes him the most overrated England rugby player of all time.
