The Calpol-inspired cocktail A Spoonful Of Sugar is a must

Six by Nico opened its doors in Belfast’s Cathedral Quarter in 2019 and became famous for its tasting menu, which rotated every six weeks.
The most recent addition has attracted a lot of attention because it transports customers straight back to their childhood, one course at a time.
It is built around nostalgia, comfort food and playful twists on the classics. The childhood menu brings together the dishes you always wanted, all grown up.

The menu also includes an optional cocktail and wine pairing for each course. On the occasion we were invited, we went for the cocktail pairing.
There were three aperitif cocktail options, and they really set the mood for what to expect from the rest of the menu. They were Cereal Milk, which had vodka, Velvet Falernum, roasted Cornflakes, brown Sugar and Milk. The second was a play on Calpol called a Spoonful Of Sugar, which had gin, strawberry, condensed milk, lemon, foamer and soda. The final was a peach ring margarita, which had tequila, jalapeño, peach, lime and soda.
There were optional add-ons before the main menu kicked off: mozzarella sticks with buffalo emulsion and caper-raisin dressing, served alongside baked sourdough. We went for the mozzarella sticks, which had a fantastic cheese pull.

Course 1 was a play on dippy eggs and soldier, which had smoked yolk, cacio e pepe espuma, brioche soldier, and white asparagus. It was the perfect way to start things off. Course 2 was cheesy beans on toast, which was an arancini ball with ‘Nduja, white bean, romesco and confit garlic.
The third course was sausage and mash, which was Andouille and malted barley sausage, potato and cheddar foam, quince and mustard caviar. It was followed by the fourth course, which was a crisp fish finger sandwich that had Lerwick coley, “tartare” Jersey royal potato, mussel velouté and summer vegetables.
What you will notice throughout is that the presentation of each course is second to none, and with course 5, it was no different. Possibly the most common thing we all ate as kids was chicken nuggets, chips and ketchup. This came presented in a very familiar red box, which could be likened to a Happy Meal from McDonald’s.

There was another optional add-on course, which was the Mr Whippy. This was whippy ice cream with a side of fries, and I will admit that I used to dip my chips into ice cream as a kid, so this course went down well for me.
The sixth and final course of the main menu was a jam roly-poly, with butterscotch “angel delight”, strawberry, almond sponge, and basil sorbet.
The cocktails that accompanied this were equally as nostalgic, and two of them really stood out. There was a Coke float which had a cola taste topped with whipped ice cream and a cherry. The other being a candyfloss cocktail, which of course was very sweet and even came with candyfloss to add in.

This experience will set you back £49 per person without cocktails, wine or additional add-ons. With wine it is an additional £30 or with cocktails it’s an additional £40.
The menu runs from Thursday to Sunday and is available in Six by Nico until July 12.
