Keanu Reeves has enjoyed a major stream of success over the last few years, particularly with live-action releases. He starred in the fourth installment of the R-rated John Wick franchise, which grossed over $440 million at the global box office, before making a smaller but poignant appearance as the same character in the 2025 Ballerina spin-off movie alongside Ana de Armas. However, Reeves has also found impressive success in the voice-over booth during the same timeframe.
Most notably, he joined the live-action Sonic the Hedgehog franchise in 2024 as Shadow the Hedgehog, serving primarily as an antagonist before siding with Sonic at the end of the film. He also voiced the leading role of Johnny Silverland in the CyberPunk 2077 video game series and got a chance to join a long legacy of Batman actors with his role as Bruce Wayne in 2022’s DC League of Super-Pets. Now, Reeves appears to be on his way to joining another massive animated franchise, which will be turned into something completely new.
According to Deadline, Keanu Reeves is in negotiations with Universal Pictures to star in a new hybrid Lego movie that will use a mix of live-action and animation. The report also noted that Josh Cooley will direct this new movie. Reeves and Cooley previously worked together on 2019’s Toy Story 4, the highest-grossing movie in the Toy Story franchise to date (although Toy Story 5 just had the franchise’s best opening weekend ever). Cooley directed the fourth Toy Story movie, while Reeves had a voice-over role as Duke Caboom, an action figure based on Canada’s greatest daredevil and stuntman.
This move comes after Warner Bros. released two animated Lego movies, 2014’s The Lego Movie and 2019’s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, which both became major hits for the studio. The first film grossed about $468 million worldwide before the second movie fell far short of those totals at about $199.6 million worldwide. In between those outings, 2017’s The Lego Batman Movie earned a fair share of success, grossing about $312.3 million worldwide, while The Lego Ninjago Movie earned $123 million globally. All four Lego movies reached past $1 billion at the worldwide box office combined.
As of this writing, plot details for this new movie are still being kept under wraps, but sources note that it will be shown through a mix of live-action and animated visuals. This could be different than the stop-motion-esque visuals seen in The Lego Movie and its sequel, but it will give Reeves a chance to shine alongside another set of iconic animated characters, as he has done so often in recent years.
