Earlier this month, the biggest superstar in women’s golf took home $2.5 million from a total $12.5 million prize purse at Riviera Country Club.
Nelly Korda banked the biggest check of her career when winning the US Women’s Open – her second consecutive major this season. But this week at the KMPG Women’s PGA Championship, the third major of five on the calendar, the stakes will be even higher.
At least financially.
This week at Hazeltine, the best LPGA players will be contending for a share of $13 million – the largest prize purse in the history of women’s golf.
The raise from last year’s $12 million purse continues a trend of rapidly increasing prize money across the women’s game. In 2017, the Women’s PGA Championship was played for $3.5 million, but there was a huge leap from $4.5 million in 2021 to $9million for the 2022 event.
“The momentum that we’re seeing as a whole – this wouldn’t happen if you didn’t believe in where it’s going,” Terry Clark, the PGA of America’s CEO, explained.
Korda, who also won $1.5 million from a $9 million purse for winning April’s Chevron Championship, is the favorite to make it three majors in a row and continue her pursuit of an unthinkable calendar slam.
