In the past we’ve kept our eyes peeled for Great North Snowdogs, Elmer the Elephant and Shaun the Sheep and this summer, your mission, if you choose to accept it, will be to hunt for Peter Rabbit. And that’s because sculptures of the much loved fictional character will start appearing all over Newcastle and North Tyneside as part of brand new trail.
Peter Rabbit™ Tales on the Tyne is being presented by and raising funds for St Oswald’s Hospice. The charity has partnered with creative producers Wild in Art, The World of Peter Rabbit and Headline Partners Newcastle City Council to bring you a free, inclusive art adventure that the whole family can enjoy.
Following the success of Great North Snowdogs in 2016, Elmer’s Great North Parade in 2019, and Shaun on the Tyne in 2023. St Oswald’s Hospice’s fourth art trail will celebrate the charity’s 40th birthday and Beatrix Potter’s 160th anniversary. From Wednesday July 15-Monday, Seoptember 14, Newcastle and North Tyneside will be transformed by the arrival of super-sized sculptures inspired by the much-loved character created by Beatrix Potter, Peter Rabbit. Located alongside some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, each Peter Rabbit sculpture will be uniquely designed by artists from the region and beyond, providing a fun, family-friendly art trail for locals and visitors to follow.
A dedicated trail map and App will help you navigate your way to discovering each sculpture, where you can unlock a series of rewards and fun facts. And, following the public trail, the large Peter Rabbit statues will be auctioned off to raise vital funds and awareness of St Oswald’s Hospice, allowing the charity to continue their vital work with North East families with life-limiting conditions.
An instantly recognisable character who we all grew up with, Peter Rabbit first appeared in one of Beatrix Potter’s books way back in 1902, before going onto appear in five more between then and 1912. The six Peter Rabbit books by Potter have sold over 150 million copies worldwide, making him one of the best loved fictional characters of all time.
