Shane Lowry was left to count the cost of another poor finish to the latest PGA Tour event as he finished T22 with Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland set to continue their play-off this morning at the Travelers Championship.
Lowry was inside the top 10 when he posted his third birdie of the day on 13, but all his hard work came undone in the closing holes.
He dropped a shot on 14 and further bogies on 16 and 17 saw him fall back to level par for his round and he closed with a par four on the 18th.
The Offaly native, who changed his caddie after a disappointing showing at the US Open at Shinnecock Hills, pocketed $209,000 (€185,437) for his week’s work after finishing eight shots behind Scheffler and Hovland.
Lowry also opened up on the reasons for parting ways with Darren Reynolds with former caddie Dermot Byrne returning to the role.
Speaking to Sky Sports on the completion of his third round on Saturday, Lowry stated: “Obviously myself and Darren finished last week. I had a great chat with him on Saturday [after the US Open]. We had a great three and a half years together and we’re good friends and he was very good to me and we experienced some great things.
“I just felt like I needed a bit of a change on the course and I felt like the five hour rounds were quite unenjoyable at times and I felt like I needed a bit of a change up.
“And then Dermot was carrying last week for a guy called James Nicholas and he qualified for the US Open. It kind of was easy to ask him to do this week because it’s only a drive up the road for him.
“So it’s been nice to have him on the bag and he’s kind of changed it up a little bit, but gave me a bit of confidence.
“Yeah, it’s just nice to kind of have an old friend on the bag.”
