Stuart Clarke, Infrastructure Director at Nexus, said:
“Metro services are currently suspended between Heworth and South Hylton and Heworth and South Shields due to a failed engineering vehicle.
“The vehicle, which we use for overhead line repair, developed an issue while on the Pelaw track junction in the early hours of this morning, Wednesday 1 July.
“This is a key Metro junction where the line splits between South Tyneside and Sunderland. Unfortunately, the location of the vehicle at this junction means that both lines are affected.
