For much of the past year, the Princess of Wales has earned widespread praise for her quiet determination, carefully balancing her return to public duties while continuing to support both Prince William and King Charles during an exceptionally difficult period for the monarchy.
But while Kate looked relaxed and composed during Trooping the Colour last weekend, sources say the celebrations came against the backdrop of a development that could once again test family relationships.
According to reports, Kate, 44, and William, 43, learned shortly before the King’s Birthday Parade that Charles is expected to welcome Prince Harry and Meghan Markle back to the UK in the coming weeks.
The announcement of their return comes four years after Meghan was last on British soil for Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral in September 2022. Harry has travelled to the UK alone on several occasions since stepping back from royal life, but this would be the first visit involving Meghan and their children, Archie, seven, and Lilibet, five.
The trip has attracted even more attention because it is said to have been encouraged by King Charles himself. Reports claim the monarch has approved security arrangements and is willing for the Sussexes to stay at a royal residence during their visit, as he hopes to spend precious time with his grandchildren.
While many see the move as an opportunity for Charles to rebuild family ties, others believe it risks reopening wounds that have never fully healed. And according to one insider, Kate is among those feeling torn.
Although she’s said to support reconciliation between Harry and his father, the source claims Meghan’s involvement makes the situation considerably more complicated.
The insider says, ‘Kate is an incredibly forgiving person, but there has been so much hurt stirred up over the years by Meghan, it’s impossible for her to simply forget everything and move on overnight.
‘Kate does want to see Harry, and she wants to do whatever she can to help the King, but there’s no denying that having Meghan there makes things worlds more complicated for her.
‘If Harry was coming on his own, it would be a very different story Kate has always had a soft spot for him; it’s Meghan’s involvement that changes the dynamic completely. As much as Kate wants this peace, it’s impossible not to worry about what chaos Meghan will bring.’

The reported plans are also said to have created fresh tensions between Charles and William.
Royal commentator Tom Sykes recently wrote in his The Royalist Substack, ‘It is an astonishing betrayal of his loyal and dutiful heir who has made clear he never wants to see Harry again, believes he should be exiled (as far away as possible) and has told friends he blames the stress of Harry and Meghan’s betrayal for aggravating Catherine’s cancer.’
According to our source, Kate finds herself understanding both sides while trying to keep the peace.
They explain, ‘William is so against the whole idea, and Kate can’t simply ignore his feelings. She understands why Charles is pushing for reconciliation, and she genuinely believes Harry should have this chance, but it’s still hard to stomach the idea of having to play nice with Meghan.
‘It’s now causing all this friction between him and his father because William feels totally betrayed that the King is welcoming her back. Just hearing Meghan’s name can set William off, so naturally that makes Kate worry about him and his stress levels.’
For years, the breakdown in Harry’s relationship with William has dominated royal headlines.
Since stepping away from royal duties in 2020, Harry, 41, and Meghan, 44, have openly discussed their experiences within the institution through interviews, documentaries and Harry’s bestselling memoir, Spare.
Among the book’s biggest revelations was Harry’s claim that William physically confronted him during an argument over Meghan. The memoir also revisited longstanding reports of tensions between Kate and Meghan.
The disagreement over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress before the Sussexes’ wedding remains one of the most talked-about episodes.
Initial reports suggested Meghan had reduced Kate to tears, but Meghan disputed that version of events during her interview with Oprah Winfrey, insisting that she had been the one left upset.
Harry later wrote in Spare that he found Meghan on “the floor” crying following the disagreement over the dresses and whether the flower girls should wear tights.

Kate also featured elsewhere in Harry’s memoir, while royal author Omid Scobie’s Endgame generated further controversy after foreign editions appeared to identify the royal alleged to have questioned the skin colour of Harry and Meghan’s unborn son. Scobie denied naming anyone, describing it as a translation error, while Buckingham Palace has consistently denied allegations of racism.
Given that history, royal watchers have inevitably questioned what another meeting between Kate and Meghan could look like.
Earlier this week, columnist Amanda Platell reflected on the reported reunion, writing, ‘How must she [Kate] feel about the ‘homecoming’ of grifter Meghan, who has done so much to discredit her, coming back here to be embraced by the King at the heart of the Royal Family?…Not very happy, one would imagine. It would only be human for her to feel slightly betrayed by such a heralded reunion. After all, both Sussexes have been so cruel to her.’
Despite everything that’s happened, Kate has consistently avoided speaking publicly about the family fallout.
Privately, however, our source says the situation is far from straightforward.
They tell us, ‘Kate’s not bad mouthing Meghan, but everyone in her inner circle knows what a difficult spot this has put her in. It’s no secret there was a lot of friction between her and Meghan, and that hasn’t nearly been forgotten. Kate wants peace; she wants Charles to have this opportunity with Harry and the children, but this is causing her no end of anxiety.
‘Kate has always risen above the drama, but just because she’s stayed quiet doesn’t mean she hasn’t been affected by everything that’s happened. There’s been so much hurt for her personally, not to mention Kate’s had a front-row seat to the impact it’s had on William, and is still having to this day.’
Sources previously told us Kate had hoped the brothers might finally begin repairing their relationship before the 30th anniversary of Princess Diana’s death next year.

However, insiders now believe those hopes have become increasingly complicated by Meghan’s reported involvement in the visit.
The source says Kate had imagined an opportunity for Harry and William to reconnect in a more personal setting, but fears that chance may now have disappeared.
They conclude, ‘She had hoped to get Harry alone for a heart-to-heart, to talk sense into him and encourage him to apologise to William, but that won’t happen now, not with Meghan watching over.
‘Kate has always been good about keeping her own feelings in check and focusing on the bigger picture, which is exactly what she intends to do this time around, but there’s no doubt Meghan’s presence is going to completely change the atmosphere.
‘Most people in the family firmly believe that Harry was manipulated by Meghan; that she stirred the pot and purposely turned him against them all, so of course there’s a huge amount of distrust and bitterness.’
If Harry and Meghan’s reported return does happen, it promises to be one of the most closely watched royal moments in recent years. While King Charles is said to be focused on family reconciliation, insiders suggest others within the Firm remain far more cautious.
And although Kate is expected to carry out her royal duties with the same grace she’s become known for, those closest to the Princess say she’s quietly preparing herself for an emotionally difficult chapter – one that could either begin healing old wounds or deepen divisions that have lingered for years.
