The artwork depicting a police officer spray-painting a heart has appeared at Adelaide Crescent in Brighton.
The graffiti style is very similar to Banksy and has sparked debate among locals as to whether it is a genuine piece.
The mysterious artist often posts his work on Instagram, a reliable way to verify his work, however, the Brighton piece is yet to feature.
Many people took to social media to speculate over the artwork, however the majority agreed it was unlikely to be a genuine piece.
One user wrote: “Absolutely no context, comment or interaction with environment. Not a bad throw up and nod to him but that is not a Banksy.”
Another added: “Looks too flat and amateur.”
A representative for Banksy has since confirmed to the BBC it is not his latest work. The Argus has contacted Banksy’s team.
The identity of Banksy remains a mystery, but there has been much speculation over who he really is.
Suggested identities have included Art Attack host Neil Buchanan, Massive Attack musician Robert Del Naja, and the Gorillaz founder Jamie Hewlett.
His work first began appearing in the early 90s in Bristol, where many believe the artist is from.
Banksy’s most recently confirmed piece was a sculpture of a man striding off a plinth with a flag in his face, in Pall Mall, London.
He posted a video of the work on his Instagram page on April 30, confirming his link to the piece.
