The channel has now confirmed that the second series of the popular drama starring David Mitchell will be shown in August but a precise date for the first episode has not yet been revealed.

Filming has concluded and the BBC has teased photos of the cast ad a trailer and an overview of the plot for season 2.

Series one of the detective drama starring David Mitchell was a huge hit in 2024, becoming the channel’s biggest new scripted show since 2022. It attracted more than 9.5 million viewers.

David Mitchell will return as John ‘Ludwig’ Taylor, while Anna Maxwell Martin will also be back as his sister-in-law, Lucy Betts-Taylor.

In the BBC trailer, the words ‘Ludwig is back’ feature in a crossword clue, and David Mitchell says: “Hello, I’m John Taylor, puzzle consultant”.

The trailer also shows glimpses of Anna Maxwell Martin’s return as Lucy.

Earlier this year, the popular actress teased what we can expect from series two, calling it “cracking” and “really, really good”.

While fans wait for season 2, they will be interested to know more about the actor who has given the BBC one of their biggest hits for years.

David Mitchell is perhaps best known for his role in the comedy series Peep Show, which he appeared in with co-star Robert Webb.

But there is a lot more information about his life on IMDb – the Internet Movie Database, one of the busiest global entertainment websites,

Mr Mitchell’s biography is posted on the site, and shows he has extensive links to Oxfordshire.

Focusing on his early life, it says: “David Mitchell was born on 14th July 1974 in Salisbury, England.

“His parents, Ian and Kathy Mitchell, worked as hotel managers in Salisbury. David also has a brother. In 1977 the family moved to Oxford, where his parents taught a course in hotel management at Oxford Brookes University.

“David was educated at Abingdon School in Oxfordshire. He has been writing comedy material since his schooldays when he used to write comedy sketches with his friends.

“A year before he went to college, David worked for a while as a proofreader for the Oxford University Press. He studied History at Peterhouse College, Cambridge.

While he was studying at Cambridge University he joined the Cambridge Footlights, where he met his comedy partner, Robert Webb. David became President of the Cambridge Footlights and after graduation he and Robert staged a two-man show at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.”

Early in his career, David worked as a freelance writer on comedy sketch shows including Armstrong and Miller and Big Train.

In 2003, he was David was cast as Mark Corrigan in the Channel 4 situation comedy Peep Show, alongside Robert Webb and the popular series ran for nine seasons, concluding in 2015.

The IMDb also contains some unusual trivia about the actor’s life.

It says: “He once made Olivia Colman wet herself during a stage production of the Miser when the hilarious way he had tied his bow-tie made her lose her control from the laughter. As a revenge she wiped her legs on his costume.”

David Mitchell and broadcaster Victoria Coren married in 2012 and the couple have two children.
