Toure flew into Tyneside at the end of last week to tie up the loose ends of his move from German club Hoffenheim.

Newcastle have agreed a €50m (£42.5m) fee with Hoffenheim for Toure, a 20-year-old winger who has just finished representing Ivory Coast at the World Cup.

The forward, who has spent most of his time playing on the left-hand side but who could also be positioned on the right flank, is understood to have successfully completed a medical and was pictured visiting St James’ Park after arriving in England.

He has been signed as a replacement for Anthony Gordon, who completed a £70m move to Barcelona last month, with his arrival set to be confirmed at the start of this week.

The Ivorian, who played in Sweden with Hammarby prior to joining Hoffenheim, will become Newcastle’s second summer signing after goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen arrived from Reims last month.

Newcastle’s recruitment team are hoping that Manzambi will follow him through the entrance door, although they are yet to agree a deal with Freiburg for the 20-year-old midfielder, who has been one of the stars of the World Cup with Switzerland.

The Magpies’ interest in Manzambi, who is valued at around €55m (£47m), long predates the start of the tournament in North America, although the level of his success as Switzerland have made the last 16 has created a sense of understandable edginess on Tyneside.

Newcastle injury blow if confirmed – with repercussions for rest of summer

Having already lost out on Victor Munoz this summer, with the Spanish winger opting to join Liverpool even though Newcastle officials felt they had a transfer to Tyneside pretty much sewn up, the Magpies hierarchy are understandably desperate to avoid the same fate with Manzambi.

There has been talk of Manchester United potentially moving for the midfielder, although at this stage, Bournemouth’s Alex Scott remains the Old Trafford club’s number one central-midfield target.

Newcastle are not aware of any concrete competition for Manzambi and feel they have done everything possible to prepare the groundwork for a move with both Freiburg officials and the player’s representatives.

Switzerland’s continued World Cup involvement is complicating matters though, with Manzambi reported to have told his representatives that he does not want to get involved in detailed talks over his future until his nation have exited the tournament. Switzerland face Colombia in the last 16 in Vancouver on Tuesday night.

Manzambi has been a revelation at the World Cup so far, scoring three goals in four matches as his driving runs through the heart of midfield have repeatedly caught the eye. He was one of Switzerland’s star performers in their last-32 win over Algeria, setting up Bree Embolo’s early opener.

Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe is understood to be excited at the prospect of being able to call upon his services next season, and the hope within St James’ Park is that a deal can be swiftly pushed through once the Swiss are out of the World Cup.

Manzambi would help replace Sandro Tonali, who was at Tottenham’s training ground at the end of last week completing his £100m move to the north London club. That transfer, which will see Spurs pay an initial fee of £92.5m with a further £7.5m of add-ons also forming part of the deal, should be confirmed at the start of this week.

Newcastle continue to monitor Lamine Camara’s situation at Monaco, with the Senegal international having long been of interest to them.

The Magpies’ recruitment team rate Camara extremely highly, but indications suggest the 20-year-old is likely to be in extremely high demand this summer which would drive his price up considerably. Newcastle will maintain a regular dialogue with Monaco, but appear to be adopting something of a watching brief at the moment.

They remain keen on James Trafford, who is another player whose future is set to be resolved once his World Cup duties are at an end.

Trafford, who is the third-choice goalkeeper in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad, has accepted he will have to leave Manchester City this summer to secure regular first-team football.

He turned down the chance to join Newcastle last summer, instead heading to City from Burnley, but is believed to be receptive to the idea of heading to Tyneside ahead of the start of next season if the financial elements of a deal can be successfully agreed.

Ipswich Town are set to make a formal offer for Nick Pope, which could lead to the goalkeeper who finished last season in Newcastle’s starting side heading to Portman Road.
