The summer transfer window has been one of frustration so far for Manchester United, with their two leading targets to headline a midfield rebuild moving elsewhere.
Manchester City swooped to sign Elliot Anderson for £116million and Mateus Fernandes has moved to Tottenham for £85million, giving United a headache as to where they look next to sign the elite-level central midfielder they are after.
They have at least agreed a deal with Atalanta to sign Ederson for an initial £35million, although that transfer will only be finalised when the midfielder returns from World Cup duty with Brazil, having been a late call-up to Carlo Ancelotti’s squad.

As well as one or two more midfielders, United also want to strengthen on the left flank, are looking for a back-up goalkeeper and would like to add an experienced forward.
Elsewhere, sales are expected, and the first went through smoothly, with Napoli’s Champions League qualification meaning Rasmus Hojlund’s loan move became permanent.
Andre Onana has completed a return to Trabzonspor on loan, while the future of Marcus Rashford remains unresolved and will be a key feature of the window once the World Cup has drawn to a close.
