Dr Graham Beck, a consultant in intensive care and anaesthesia, took on the challenge during a period of leave.

The 64-year-old is not a regular cyclist and, rather than taking the traditional 870-mile (1,400 km) direct route, he chose to avoid main roads in favour of quiet lanes.

The consultant said: “A sabbatical is a good chance to spend time away from work to recharge batteries and I’m grateful for the opportunity to take that time.

“While some may have opted for rest and relaxation, I decided to be active and challenge myself to do something totally different.”

The firm he works for, the Medical Specialist Group, has pledged to donate to Wheels for You, a charity aimed at making cycling accessible for all.
