Although Europe has the world’s highest density of healthcare workers, the sector is increasingly understaffed and struggling to keep up with the demands of an ageing population. Projections suggest that, by 2070, Europe could face a shortage of nearly 1 million healthcare workers.
Our guests look at this issue from different angles, covering challenges such as staff wellbeing, the appeal of the profession and the migration of healthcare workers. They also discuss potential solutions and the way forward, including optimising services and strengthening disease prevention efforts.
Our host Jonathan Elliott is joined by 3 experts in the field: Tomas Zapata, who leads the Health Workforce and Service Delivery unit at the World Health Organization’s Regional office for Europe; Monica Pace, a statistical officer at Eurostat, working on health statistics; and Katarzyna Ptak-Bufkens, a policy officer in the European Commission’s Directorate-General for Health and Food Safety.
