John McEnroe was forced to leave his BBC commentary position during Arthur Fery’s match against Grigor Dimitrov at Wimbledon. The American was alongside Andrew Cotter and Tim Henman in the BBC commentary box when he had to step away from his duties.
Fery, the final British player remaining in either the men’s or women’s singles field, had taken the opening set 7-5. However, his far more seasoned rival fought back to secure the second, 6-3, and third, 6-4.
Fery opted for an extended toilet break between the second and third sets, during which time McEnroe made a quick departure. “I think we’re going to have to bid farewell at this point,” Cotter informed viewers. “John McEnroe to take a break, never to return.”
McEnroe responded: “Well, hopefully I’ll return but I’ve got contractual obligations to do the lone American in the draw, Taylor Fritz.”

McEnroe said of Fritz: “He’s maybe the slight favourite to get to the final on this half. I’m sure [Alexander] Bublik, [Alexander] Zverev and others may have a say about that. You guys call a great rest of the match.”
Ninth seed Linda Noskova had just defeated Madison Keys 6-4, 7-6(2) in the second match of the day on Court 1, with Flavio Cobolli claiming a straight sets win of his own over Alex de Minaur to start the day’s show court action. That meant Fritz was due to begin his encounter with Bublik earlier than he might have expected.
Speaking after his round three victory over Lorenzo Sonego, the No.6 seed recognised he had a challenging match up ahead. Even before discovering whether it would be Bublik or Frances Tiafoe on the other side of the net, Fritz wasn’t getting ahead of himself.

“I don’t really have a preference between the two of ’em,” the 28-year-old said. “Both are very crafty. Good grass court players playing well. In form.
“I have good stuff to go off of because I played both of them in this grass court season. No preference. But both really, really dangerous players. It’s not an easy round of 16.”
