Plans have been approved by Stevenage Borough Council for the extension of Lister at level four to provide staff welfare facilities, together with alterations at levels three and four to provide a covered terrace and new commercial space.

A report written by a planning officer at the council says: “The proposed works would be of no particular architectural merit, but they would be entirely in keeping with their hospital surroundings.”

The report continues: “The proposed development would deliver significant public benefits in supporting the function of Lister Hospital as a regionally important healthcare facility.

“These benefits carry great weight in favour of granting permission.

“In all other respects, including the impact on the character and appearance of the surrounding area, on the amenities of neighbouring occupiers and on parking, the proposal is considered to be acceptable and to accord with relevant policies.”
