In a tribute issued through the force, his son described his father as someone who had a “good heart” and “always cared” for those around him.

“I remember growing up as a kid, walking to the shops with you. You’d make me laugh and give me a hand full of change to buy sweets,” he said.

“There are so many fond memories that I share with you.”

His daughter added: “It’s strange and impossible to put into words what we are feeling.

“For years you were our dad. Dad, you shaped part of who we are today. Rest in peace, love you.”

Police added both children had asked for privacy during this “incredibly difficult” time.
