I certainly didn’t expect to be writing about Project Awakening today, but I’ll take it!
You’ve got a good memory if you remember this one. Project Awakening was first announced all the way back in 2016, but it really caught people’s attention when it popped up during the PlayStation LineUp Tour two years later, in 2018.
That teaser trailer, which showcased a warrior with a sword and shield squaring off against some kind of lizard-like beast, looked phenomenal at the time, and confirmed that the game was in development for PS4.
Of course, we’re now eight years down the line (eight!) and we still don’t have any sort of release window.
Shockingly, though, Project Awakening is still in development — as confirmed by Japanese outfit Cygames itself.
The Granblue Fantasy-creator has given an update to Famitsu (as reported by HDKirin and translated by Gematsu), with president Koichi Watanabe stating that the title is “steadily progressing”. That’s one way to put it.
“Everyone on the team is working each day with a real sense of confidence that things are coming together,” he adds.
As previously revealed, Project Awakening is an open world action RPG — but we don’t know much more than that.
It was last mentioned in 2024, when, in a very similar story to this one, Cygames reiterated that production was ongoing as part of a business update.
“The overall direction remains largely the same, but as development has progressed, we’ve continued polishing it by adding new elements here and there,” Watanabe explains.
The wait continues, then, but it’s worth noting that Famitsu was shown new footage from Project Awakening. With any luck, this means that we’ll get to see it again in the (relatively) near future.
