Luqobo Makwedini has died aged 20 – his brother Monty Loggenberg is a former Tiger

Leicester Tigers have thrown their support behind former player Monty Loggenberg after his 20-year-old brother tragically died following a rugby training session in France.
Luqobo Makwedini collapsed after a session with French club Béziers on Friday morning and died in hospital a few hours later.
He is reported to have suffered a cardiac arrest, although the exact cause of his death has not been officially confirmed. Leicester Tigers said in a statement they were “shocked and saddened” to hear of his death.
The club said the thoughts of everyone at Tigers were with Béziers and with Makwedini’s family, “including his brother and former Tiger Monty Loggenberg.”

Béziers president Bob Skinstad, the former Springbok captain, confirmed Makwedini’s death in a statement on Friday evening.
Skinstad said Makwedini had joined the club’s training centre during the off-season and “quickly became a valued member of the Red and Blue family.”
He said: “His commitment, kindness and personal qualities deeply impressed everyone at the club. Today, the entire Red and Blue family is united in mourning and deeply shaken by this heartbreaking loss.
“We extend our deepest condolences and heartfelt sympathy to his family, loved ones, teammates and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. We respectfully request that the club, our players and Bibo’s loved ones be given the time and privacy they need to grieve during this extremely difficult period.”
Makwedini, known as “Bibo”, had come through the ranks at Wynberg Boys’ High School in Cape Town before joining Béziers’ academy ahead of the 2025/26 season.
He was a former South Africa Under-18 international and had been regarded as one of the club’s brightest young prospects.
Loggenberg, a back row player, joined Leicester Tigers during the 2024/25 season and made one senior appearance for the club in the Premiership Cup.
He left Tigers at the end of the 2025/26 season along with five other Senior Academy players.
