It’s no surprise that Toulouse Olympique boast the most players from any single team in our Super League Round 18 team of the week after the French side dismantled St Helens on Sunday afternoon.

Some expected Toulouse to fare well or even win, as was predicted by one of our writers, but no one could imagine the nature of the victory as the Olympians ran out as 46-0 victors.

Paul Rowley accused his side of giving up but credit needs to be paid to Toulouse who forced that quit in the Red Vee, and that’s evident in the fact three of their side have been selected to our team of the week.

There are also representatives of Leigh, Wakefield and Leeds after their Saturday victories against Castleford, Hull KR and Catalans Dragons, respectively.

As for Friday night, two from each of Bradford Bulls and Wigan Warriors are picked with both sides victorious.

Super League Round 18 Team of the Week

Full-back: Olly Ashall-Bott (Toulouse Olympique)

In picking Ashall-Bott, we’re leaving out young gun Josh Cartwright, who was excellent in just his third Wigan appearance, however, Ashall-Bott is forming a real case to be England’s full-back at this year’s World Cup, or at least to be selected. His five try assists and tally of over 150 run metres highlight why he is so dangerous.

Winger: David Armstrong (Leigh Leopards)

Shifted from his natural position of full-back, Armstrong operated on both the wing and in the centres as he scored two tries and assisted Lachlan Lam’s with a brilliant chip over the top. Fully fit and on dry tracks, he could be the competition’s most devastating players in this final third of the season.

Centre: Umyla Hanley (Leigh Leopards)

Continuing to put together his case to be on the plane to Australia, Hanley had another standout performance in the centres both offensively and defensively with his kick chase suffocating the Tigers at times.

Centre: Waqa Blake (Bradford Bulls)

Bradford landed their first away win of the season and Waqa Blake was key to that, scoring two tries as he terrorised the Huddersfield right edge.

Winger: Austin Daniel (Wigan Warriors)

Whilst Josh Cartwright didn’t quite make the team, his wing teammate Daniel did with the young outside back deserving of his try late on. He had one disallowed earlier in the game but wouldn’t be denied in what was a strong second game for Wigan.

Half-back: Brodie Croft (Leeds Rhinos)

Maika Sivo finally stopped scoring and he’ll soon have Brodie Croft breathing down his neck with the half scoring three more tries, taking his season tally to 20. He also make an impressive 27 tackles, showcasing his defensive efforts.

Half-back: Jayden Nikorima (Bradford Bulls)

Like Blake, Nikorima was key to victory for Bradford with the half-back registering a try and an assist but more important were his 225 run metres as he stretched the Giants defence.

Prop: Caius Faatili (Wakefield Trinity)

Super League’s most impactful prop of the bench? It’s hard to argue that given the form Faatili has worked himself back into in recent weeks with the latest example being Saturday’s two-try cameo against Hull KR as he also made 96 metres in limited minutes.

Hooker: Brad O’Neill (Wigan Warriors)

The clear candidate to be England’s hooker at the World Cup? Not many would argue with that given how dominant O’Neill has been in recent weeks and he has stepped up even more in the absence of so many senior players. The hooker topped his team’s tackle count with 42.

Prop: John Toleafoa (Toulouse Olympique)

The stats perhaps don’t do Toleafoa all the justice but for those who watched the game, they’ll have seen how destructive the recent recruit was down the middle. Always quick to his feet for the play the ball, he also got away two offloads with one helping create Tiaki Chan’s try.

Second-row: Mathieu Jussaume (Toulouse Olympique)

Jussaume has been a strong performer all year and after a brace last week, he went one better and scored a hat-trick on Sunday as he racked up 100 running metres in a very strong showing.

Second-row: Chris Hankinson (Leeds Rhinos)

Perhaps the most successful position change since that of his teammate Kallum Watkins. Hankinson looks a natural in the second-row and Brad Arthur even admitted he hooked him with ten minutes to go as a reward for his performance, in which he made 124 metres and 25 tackles.

Loose forward: Joe Mellor (Bradford Bulls)

Joe Mellor is aging like a fine wine and continues to showcase just how important he is to the Bulls, racking up a team-high 41 tackles whilst also registering an assist and two offloads.
