Bryson DeChambeau arrives at The Open aiming to avoid the ignominy of missing cuts in all four of the majors this season.

That unwanted milestone, Sir Nick Faldo says, would have to be named the “rough slam.”

Faldo was asked on the Sky Sports Golf podcast why DeChambeau’s major malaise has contrasted with his LIV Golf form, where he has won two events this season.

“They’re superstars at LIV and then can’t do it. That’s another story,” Faldo said. “I’d say it to his face: DeChambeau has zero clue of strategy.”

“He said last year, ‘I’m going to go out and attack the links.’ Well, I’ve never attacked a links. You thread it, don’t you? You feed it down the fairway. You look at humps and bumps. If I send it over and feed it, it nudges back into play.

“You don’t think, ‘Oh, I’ll just blast it down there. Can’t see where I’m going.’ The fairway is 20 yards wide.

“Good luck! Even if you hit it fantastic and it lands on the corner of a divot, you might still miss the fairway. It’s so important. And he’ll stand up and just keep bombing away… but you can be completely blocked out on a links.”

At last year’s Open at Royal Portrush, DeChambeau rather miraculuously finished in a tie for 10th.

He shot a 7-over par 78 in his opening round – leaving him well outside the cut mark – but scrambled incredibly on the Dunluce Links with rounds of 65-68-64 to vault up the leaderboard. His previous best Open finish in six starts was a tie for eighth at St Andrews in 2022, while he has missed the cut twice.

DeChambeau is certainly not being fancied in the golf media this week.

Brandel Chamblee described DeCahmbeau as one of the surprises of the season, suggesting on Golf Channel’s ‘Live From’ that the two-time US Open winner is conflicted between his pursuit of success in both the golf and online world.

“It’s almost like he went from chasing Scottie Scheffler and Rory McIlroy to chasing Grant Horvat,” said Chamblee. “It’s like he wants to outdo every YouTuber in the game of golf instead of outplay everybody in the game of golf.”

DeChambeau is in one of the marquee groups this week, teeing off on Thursday at 9.58am alongside defending champion Scottie Scheffler and LIV colleague Tyrrell Hatton.
