We’re a week out from a new season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, and we’re learning little things like episode titles and potentially big things like storylines and guest appearances. If you want to stay completely spoiler free, here’s your warning to exit the sector. But we’re warping into what we’re learning about Season 4 ahead of its premiere.

New clip: Uhura meets the new Vulcan

Today Paramount released a brief clip showing Uhura dealing with a new Vulcan cadet, and it gets awkward. Check it out below via social media.

Episode titles

The ten episode titles have been revealed, and there might be something to learn from them even without seeing the episodes. For example, the title of the season premiere, “Valles Marineris,” is a massive canyon on Mars. Here’s all ten titles:

Any Trek fan’s pointed ears are likely perked up at the title of the season finale, a seeming play on the classic Next Generation episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise” when Captain Picard and the Enterprise-D met Captain Garrett’s Enterprise-C. Are Captain Pike and crew set to meet Captain Harriman’s Enterprise-B? Aside from the opening act of Star Trek: Generations, we’ve never seen that ship in action or learned of its adventures in cannon. One can only hope the episode takes place after Tuesday. But this crew loves to muck around and take risks, so could it visit the Enterprise-A from the movie era? Or perhaps we see Kacey Rohl’s Captain Garrett at the helm of the Enterprise-C before the battle with the Romulans?

Aside from that, we’ve been promised a push towards Kirk and Spock’s iconic friendship this season, which could be what “Human Best Friend” is hinting at. “Once La’an a Time” may give us a hint to where Christina Chong’s La’an Noonien Singh character is off to once the Enterprise transitions from Captain Pike to Captain Kirk. Another episode to keep an eye on is “Orders of Magnitude.” Assuming there isn’t a surprise, this episode will air on Sept. 10, two days after the franchise’s 60th birthday. And who knows that “Level-Five Transporter Accident” could possibly be in reference to? We’ll just have to wait and see.

Oh, Baby

We learned that David Marcus, Kirk’s son introduced in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, will be featured in at least one episode this season. The show opened the door to this in Season 2 when Paul Wesley’s Kirk told La’an Singh that things were messy with someone he was seeing because they were expecting a baby. Per Memory Alpha, that episode (“Subspace Rhapsody,” the musical) takes place in 2260, and the finale of Season 3 is roughly a year later. So it’s fair to say, barring a time jump, little David is pretty young.

In an interview with Cinemablend, showrunner Henry Alonso Meyers says this is what the team is going for.

“I don’t want to call it a rewrite, but it’s like a rethink. The experience of David was not a part of the series because they didn’t really figure David out until the movies….Kirk is heroic, and none of us wanted to imagine that he is a lousy father, so that offered a lot of opportunities about how to get into his mind, emotionally.” – Henry Alonso Meyers

This doesn’t technically run afoul of the continuity in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, where it’s clear Kirk and David are estranged and at the very least haven’t seen each other since David was a child. In the movie, Kirk asks David’s mother, Carol Marcus, why she didn’t explain to David that it was her wish that Kirk “stay away.” So, it’s plausible that Kirk was there at least in part in the beginning before Carol asked him to shoo.

Some Tricky Vulcans

It’s also been revealed a pair of high profile Vulcans that have admitted to filming episodes of Strange New Worlds, but we don’t know if it’s Season 4 or 5. It is only logical that James Frain’s Sarek from Star Trek Discovery return, and Frain seemed to confirm it in a now-deleted Instagram post, but this will be another tough needle to thread for the writers. In the Season 2 episode of Star Trek, “Journey to Babel,” it’s clear that Kirk doesn’t know who Spock’s parents are and that Spock and his father haven’t spoken in some time. Still, Frain was in 11 episodes of Discovery to develop Michael Burnham, who grew up with Spock as Sarek’s adopted daughter.

Plus, character actor and comedian Patton Oswalt said (on Conan O’Brien’s podcast) he is reprising his role as Doug the Vulcan at some point before the show ends. He appeared in the Season 3 episode “Four-and-a-Half Vulcans” as a Vulcan fascinated by human culture, but not very fluent in it.
