Mestiz’s woven world of flowers, animals, and curious creatures

Mexican design studio MESTIZ turns wicker into a medium of storytelling, unveiling a new family of handwoven creatures for upcoming Hermès window installations across Mexico. Large flowers sprout from striped planters, butterflies hover beside violet elephants, crabs clutch bright red handbags, and fish appear to swim through fields of tulips. The collection forms an imagined ecosystem where familiar objects abandon their everyday roles and take on playful personalities, like characters in a children’s book, turning wicker into a medium for storytelling.

These expressive creatures are set to occupy Hermès windows across Mexico, bringing MESTIZ’s woven worlds from the workshop into the street. Oversized flowers emerge from striped planters, handbags sprout legs, while butterflies, birds, elephants, and sea creatures share the same imagined landscape. Their exaggerated proportions and saturated colors draw on the language of folklore and childhood fantasy.

The project also demonstrates how far the studio can push the material beyond its familiar forms. The same woven wicker forms flower petals, butterfly wings, elephant trunks, and crab claws, creating a cast of characters from a single material.

The pieces are conceived as part of a single environment, within which each creature appears to interact with the next, encouraging passersby to imagine the scene as a living world.
