Solicitor Emma Bruce is right when she says no woman should be prescribed Depo‑Provera without first being fully informed of the increased health risks it carries.
The contraceptive jab has left users with brain tumours, bulging eyes, scars and sight loss after consistent use. Bruce is a solicitor representing 150 women from Scotland who are fighting to seek damages against manufacturer Pfizer.
Among that number is a 47-year-old who took the shot on and off for several years before four tumours were discovered inside her skull. There are many other horrific examples of a similar nature.
It’s now vital the NHS in Scotland updates its guidance on how the drug is used. At present, NHS guidelines state there is a “small chance” of developing a brain tumour from frequent use of the jab.
But a 2024 study found women who used Depo-Provera were five times more likely to be diagnosed with non-cancerous brain tumours. Legal actions against Pfizer are already underway in England and in the US, and further cases are likely elsewhere.
When the Record first reported on Depo‑Provera in February and the harms it was allegedly causing some women, there were less than a handful of examples in Scotland who had gone public.
But in the months that followed, the figure snowballed to 150 after we continued to highlight and unearth the scandal. It’s likely the real number of potential victims in Scotland is far, far higher.
Women must be made aware of the risks, and that should start with updated NHS guidance.
Farage’s faux pas
If Nigel Farage wants to be taken seriously as a future prime minister he has a distinctly strange way of showing it. Serious party leaders expect tough questioning from the media, especially when it comes to the issue of political donations.
Farage is under increasing scrutiny after it was revealed he accepted a £5m donation shortly before he became an MP in 2024. He insists this is all a private matter and wishes people would stop asking about it.
Farage’s decision to quit Parliament and force a by-election in Clacton, where he will be re-elected almost unopposed, looks a huge error of judgement. He will spend weeks on a campaign trail up against fringe or novelty candidates.
Farage must explain where all donations come from and what donors expect from him in return. And if donations have found their way north to Reform in Scotland, that must be made clear as well.
