Momo and Nima, born at Marwell Zoo earlier this year on May 20 have now officially been named, the zoo has announced.

Marwell said the male cub was called Momo after a Tibetan word for dumpling, reflecting a traditional cuisine from the Himalayan region where snow leopards are found.

The female cub’s name also paid homage to the animals Tibetan heritage with Nima being the Tibetan word for sun.

These cubs are crucial to the European breeding programme as snow leopards are listed as vulnerable on the IUCN Red List.

The new arrivals are expected to play a significant role in conservation efforts.

The pair cubs’ were the first little to be born to their mother, Zaya, who joined Marwell Zoo in March 2025.

The birth is particularly significant for Marwell Wildlife Zoo as they are the first snow leopard cubs born there in over a decade.
