After being dropped from the brand’s lineup in 2023, the beloved Surly Big Dummy has officially returned! It’s available now in a fresh “Twilight Zone” color and three sizes for $2,699 complete. Learn more about the newest version of the classic cargo-hauler here…

The news is glum these days, but the announcement that the Surly Big Dummy has made a surprise comeback is a bright spot in this morning’s headlines. Debuted in 2008, the Big Dummy is an analog longtail cargo bike that can easily replace a car for many urban trips. As Surly puts it, it’s “meant to make you rethink how you carry all your crap.”

Surly’s Big Dummy is a simple, genuinely useful tool that’s a blast to ride. With its 400-pound combined rider and cargo weight limit, it can easily handle grocery store runs, small passengers, and all manner of other errands. Speaking from experience, I have fond memories of hauling camping gear, other bikes, and even complete apartments on a friend’s Big Dummy back in the early 2010s, on and off the road.

The new Big Dummy still rolls on good ol’ 26-inch wheels and can clear 2.5-inch tires with fenders, though it’s compatible with 700c, 27.5-inch, and 29-inch wheels as well. It comes specced with a rear derailleur but is Rohloff compatible, sports three standard bottle mounts and one three-pack mount in the frame (two bottles on size small), and is equipped with a center-mount kickstand. The frame and matching Surly Cocktail Fork are made from the brand’s TIG-welded 4130 Chromoly Natch tubing. According to Surly, the single-piece frame increases stiffness and decreases torsional flex.

Surly is offering the Big Dummy in a single, sensible complete build for $2,699. The complete weight of a size medium with rack and bags is 45 pounds and 14 ounces. Buyers interested in building up their own Big Dummy can also buy it as a full frame kit for $1,999. Both prices include a paint-matched Dummy Deck with Dummy Rails, Dummy Rail Collars, and Big Dummy Bags (version 2.0). It’s available in three sizes and one deep-blue “Twilight Zone” color—a safe name by Surly standards. See the full build kit below:
