Former England international Kieran Trippier admitted Maidenhead United had given his new Wolves team a tough night in Wednesday’s friendly at York Road.
Wolves emerged victorious in a 1-0 friendly win that was watched by 3,226 fans packed in around all four sides of the ground.
Mateus Mane got the game’s only goal, sweeping a low shot beyond United keeper Jordi Van Stappershoef in the 59th minute, but it was from one of the few occasions the Championship side really opened up the Magpies’ defence.

Generally, they were restricted to half-chances in their first pre-season run out under new boss Cesar Peixoto, and Trippier was impressed by what he saw from the National League South team over the course of the night.
He was complimentary about the way Maidenhead approached the game and how disciplined they were defensively. He added that this performance should give them confidence as they head into the new league season.
Trippier was signed by Wolves this summer from Newcastle United following the club’s relegation from the Premier League. He started the evening in left back and played the first 45 minutes before Peixoto took him off as he made a raft of half-time changes.
Trippier admitted afterwards he’d also been given a heads up by his brother, Kelvin Lomax, who has played against Maidenhead United before.
Speaking after the final whistle, he said: “It’s always difficult coming away from home and playing teams like this. My brother gave me a heads up because he’s played against them before. A very good team. It’s always hard to play at grounds like this, but fair play to them, they set up well and I hope they do well this season.
“I think it was a sell out, so fair play to them. Even our travelling supporters. Yeah, they made it difficult for us, especially in the second half.
“They were nice and compact; the keeper has made some great saves. But yeah, we got a win and we got a clean sheet so that’s good for us and it gives us good momentum going into the weekend’s game.
“It’s good for them to play a team like us because it will give them a lot of confidence. They had some chances as well. So, they played very well today, they were well organised and their manager set them up very well.
“They’ll take confidence from this game today and I think they’ll do very well this season. It was a tough game for us today. You’ve got to give them a lot of credit; they made it difficult for us in moments of the game.
“Mane has come up with a winner for us and that shows his quality, hopefully he can do that for us in the rest of the season.
“He’s a good young player; he has a bright future in front of him. He has got to keep his head down this season, work hard and hopefully he’ll score many goals for the club.”
